How to Choose a Tiffany Lamp: A Complete Buying Guide
Buying a Tiffany lamp for the first time, or adding to a collection, can feel overwhelming when you're looking at hundreds of options across multiple styles, sizes, fixture types, and price points. This guide walks you through every decision you'll need to make, in the order you should make them, so you can find the right lamp with confidence.
We've been selling Tiffany-style stained glass lamps since 1988. Everything in this guide reflects what we've learned from 30+ years of helping customers find the right piece for their home.
Step 1 - Choose Your Fixture Type
The first decision isn't about style or color really, it's about function. What kind of lamp do you need, and where will it go? The fixture type determines everything else.
Table Lamps
The most popular Tiffany lamp format by far and the one most people picture when they think of a Tiffany lamp. Table lamps sit on side tables, end tables, console tables, nightstands, and desks. They are available in more styles, sizes, and price points than any other fixture type. If you're buying your first Tiffany lamp, it's almost certainly a Tiffany table lamp. Our table lamp collection spans nearly 200 products from ~$190 to $4,000, with a median price of ~$375.
Floor Lamps
A Tiffany floor lamp makes a dramatic statement in a living room, bedroom, or reading corner. Floor lamps come in torchiere format (shade faces up, light bounces off ceiling), standard downward-facing format, and reading lamp format (adjustable arm positions shade over a chair). At more than 50 options, from ~$270 to $4,300, floor lamps are our second most popular lighting category.
Pendant Lights
Hanging pendant lights work beautifully in dining rooms, over kitchen islands, in entryways, in stairwells, and even in outdoor areas protected from the elements. Tiffany pendant lights include both downward-facing pendants and inverted bowl pendants that direct light upward. Prices range from ~$220 to $3,200.
Ceiling Lights
For rooms where hanging fixtures aren't practical, flush mount and semi-flush ceiling fixtures bring stained glass to the ceiling plate. Tiffany flush mount ceiling lights are ideal for bedrooms, hallways, and kitchens with lower ceilings. Semi-flush ceiling lights hang slightly lower and work well in dining rooms and living rooms with standard 8-foot ceilings.
Chandeliers
Tiffany chandeliers are statement pieces for dining rooms, entryways, foyers, and great rooms. Multi-light fixtures that distribute stained glass beauty across a wide ceiling footprint. Our chandelier collection ranges from ~$400 to $2,500.
Wall Sconces
Tiffany wall sconces add accent and ambient lighting to hallways, dining rooms, and bedrooms. Many styles have matching table lamp and floor lamp companions for coordinated rooms. Our stained glass sconces range from ~$230 to $1,100.
Billiard Lamps
Tiffany billiard lamps are wide-span hanging fixtures designed specifically for pool tables and game room islands. Available in 32" and 40" widths. These fixtures range from ~$1,600 to $4,200 and often require being shipped by freight truck due to size.
Step 2 - Choose the Right Size
Lamp size is the most common mistake buyers make... a shade that is too small looks lost on a large table, and a shade that is too large overwhelms a small space. Here is how to size correctly.
Table Lamp Shade Diameter
The standard rule is that a lamp shade diameter should be roughly equal to two-thirds the height of the lamp base. For placement purposes, the shade diameter should not extend beyond the edges of the surface the lamp sits on. A 16-inch shade on a small nightstand will overhang, a ~12-inch shade is a solid choice.
- Under 20 inches tall - accent lamps and small table lamps for nightstands, bookshelves, and compact side tables.
- 20 to 24 inches tall - the most versatile size range, suitable for most standard side tables and end tables.
- 24 to 27 inches tall - larger side tables, console tables, and statement placements.
- Over 27 inches tall - statement table lamps and large surface placements.
Floor Lamp Height
Standard floor lamps range from 58 to 72 inches tall. The shade of a standing floor lamp should sit at approximately eye level when you are seated - typically 48 to 52 inches from the floor. Torchiere floor lamps are typically a bit taller (usually 70+ inches) since they direct light upward rather than outward.
Ceiling Clearance
For pendant lights and chandeliers, the bottom of the fixture should typically hang at least 7 feet from the floor in any area where people walk. Over dining tables, 30 to 34 inches above the table surface is the standard. For flush and semi-flush mounts, measure your ceiling height, flush mounts add only 4 to 6 inches below the ceiling, semi-flush adds 8 to 12 inches.
Step 3 - Choose Your Style
This is the most personal decision and the one most buyers find most enjoyable. Tiffany-style stained glass lamps span several major design traditions, each with a distinct aesthetic character. See our complete Tiffany Lamp Styles Guide for a deep dive, here is a brief overview:

Where to Start
If you are buying your first Tiffany lamp, start with a Tiffany table lamp in the 20–24 inch range at a price point between $250 and $400. This gives you the most choice, the most flexibility in placement, and the best balance of quality and value. Choose a style that resonates with the room it will live in. A dragonfly lamp for a study or reading corner, a wisteria for a bedroom, a mission geometric for a craftsman-style living room.
